Self-Assessment in LPN Practice
The College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta (CLPNA) recently released a new module, Self-Assessment in LPN Practice. This module is available through the CLPNA鈥檚 Learning Management System.
Through self-assessment, LPNs can determine the best ways to meet requirements for personal and professional development.
What Is Self-Assessment?
Self-assessment is a crucial part of developing and maintaining continuing competence. It is also an integral part of the CLPNA鈥檚 Continuing Competence Program (CCP). As you can see from the graphic below, self-assessment is the first step in the CCP framework.
For health professionals, self-assessment is a process of reflecting on current skills, knowledge, and judgements with the goal of identifying areas that require further learning.
How Can LPNs Engage in Self-Assessment?
An important component of LPN self-assessment is reflecting on current nursing practice and experiences. Reflection can be informal, such as through journaling or discussion with a colleague, or it can be more structured. Successful reflection involves honesty, curiosity, and open mindedness.
